Building Legacy and Loyalty

How Susan Damiani Grew The McCallen Society at St. John’s University

Susan Damiani

For more than 20 years, Susan M. Damiani, M.B.A. ’87CBA Director of Gift Planning and head of The McCallen Society at St. John’s University, has been a driving force in transforming legacy giving into a vibrant community of generosity and belonging.

Under her leadership, The McCallen Society, which is St. John’s legacy giving society, has flourished. With her and her team’s help, it has reached an extraordinary milestone: its 25th anniversary goal of 100 new members.

It’s a success story built on heart, vision, and partnership powered in part by Susan’s  collaboration with Planned Giving Marketing (PGM).

A Legacy Rooted in Connection

When Susan stepped into her role, she understood that legacy giving wasn’t about transactions. It was about relationships.

“Legacy giving is one of the most personal ways donors express their belief in St. John’s mission,” she said. “My goal is to make every donor feel valued and connected.”

That belief has guided everything she’s built. From one-on-one conversations to personalized stewardship events, Susan has made sure each McCallen member feels part of a community that shares a deep, lasting commitment to the University’s future.

Her warmth and authenticity have transformed The McCallen Society from a recognition group into something much greater: a network of alumni and friends united by purpose.

Celebrating 25 Years of The McCallen Society

Last year, Susan embarked on an ambitious mission: welcoming 100 new McCallen members in honor of the Society’s 25th anniversary.

Through thoughtful communication, consistent follow-up, and creative outreach, she did just that. More importantly, she strengthened relationships with existing members, sparking renewed excitement and connection throughout the alumni community.

The anniversary wasn’t just a milestone; it was a reflection of Susan’s core philosophy: planned giving is about gratitude, connection and belonging.

How Planned Giving Marketing Supports the Mission

Planned Giving Marketing has been Susan’s partner for more than 5 years, helping her keep The McCallen Society top of mind for St. John’s alumni and friends.

Through customized print and digital campaigns, personalized storytelling, and donor-focused outreach, PGM’s materials have supported her vision to connect and inspire.

“Susan has an incredible instinct for building relationships,” said Jeff Stein, PGM’s President. “Our role has been to help her scale that personal touch so she can reach thousands of donors and prospective McCallen members while still making each one feel seen.”

Together, Susan and PGM have built campaigns that do more than communicate. They nurture engagement and action. From inspiring newsletters to well-timed follow-ups, PGM’s strategies have helped The McCallen Society grow sustainably while keeping Susan’s authentic voice at the heart of it all.
