GREG: Make sure you have your photo on any type of piece that’s going out. I know most of us are like, “Oh, I don’t want to be photographed,” but that’s so key for donors and prospective donors.
One of the higher ed’s I worked for produced a lot of teachers, and I can’t tell you how many times one came to a meeting we had set up with them carrying a marketing piece that had my photo on it, just to make sure that I was really the person they were talking to: the person on the back of that postcard. They wanted to make sure I was really me, and I was the person on the back of that postcard.
That has obviously stuck with me… just how important that personal as well as missional connection actually is.
And, as Jeff was saying, you want to be in their mailbox as much as possible and as consistent as possible.
Our jobs are frequently whirlwinds, so you need that schedule, you need that plan that makes those things happen because donors don’t know all the craziness that goes on behind our walls that make it so we can’t call them whenever we want to call them or think we should call them.
Fundraisers need that external thing (marketing) that’s dropping those pieces regularly when they should be going so you are in front of mind for them. They WILL take that mailer from four years ago that’s in their file cabinet. They’ll say, “Okay, I’m ready now, I’m going to call Greg even though he doesn’t remember calling me from four years ago.”
